Collaboration Between Humans and Computers: The Key to Scientific Breakthroughs

In an interview with NEMO Kennislink, Frank van Harmelen discusses the transformative potential of Hybrid Intelligence, emphasizing how the collaboration between humans and AI can lead to major scientific breakthroughs rather than replacing human input.

Van Harmelen highlights how AI tools, such as AskYourPDF, already support scientists in tasks like literature reviews and writing. However, he points out that while AI excels at recognizing patterns and generating hypotheses, it still lacks the ability to create truly meaningful insights without human guidance.

He is convinced that the power of AI lies not in replacing humans but in the collaboration between humans and computers. While there is much excitement about the potential “third wave of AI” – the combination of machine learning and knowledge-based AI – he still sees this as a distant future.
