Dr. Jonne Maas defends PhD on Power Dynamics and Non-Domination in AI
Dr. Jonne Maas has successfully defended her PhD thesis titled “Freedom in the Digital Age: Designing for Non-Domination.”
Her dissertation analyzes the power dynamics in AI development and deployment through the lens of freedom as non-domination. She identifies how domination can arise between AI system developers and those affected by these systems, due to unequal decision-making power, technical limitations, and structural inequalities. To protect freedom in the digital age, the thesis argues that AI should be intentionally designed to mitigate such domination, taking into account broader societal and regulatory contexts.
Congratulations to Jonne and all who supported her research.
