Exploring Hybrid Argumentation and Responsible AI at Lorentz Center Workshop

Bart Verheij (University of Groningen) is one of the organisers of the upcoming Lorentz Center workshop Hybrid Argumentation and Responsible AI, taking place from 31 March to 4 April in Leiden. The event brings together around 50 invited participants from diverse disciplines—philosophy, linguistics, computer science, and hybrid AI—who will spend the week exploring how argumentation can support responsible interaction between humans and intelligent systems.

The workshop aims to build bridges between four key communities:

  • Argumentation theory (philosophers and scholars from the humanities)
  • Argument mining (NLP researchers)
  • Computational argumentation (computer scientists)
  • Human-centric AI (the hybrid intelligence community)

The Hybrid Intelligence Center is well-represented at the workshop, with several HI researchers actively contributing. HI-Groningen is supporting the event, alongside BNVKI.

A highlight of the week is the public panel session on Thursday (15:30–17:30), which aims to connect the research to societal challenges and perspectives. The panel will be moderated by Chris Reed (University of Dundee) and includes:

  • Bennie Mols (science journalist)
  • Inge Lodder (Elavv)
  • Jonne Maas (The Green Land)
  • Emmanuelle Dietz (Airbus)
  • Anita de Waard (Elsevier)
