Upcoming Workshop: Guidelines for Guidelines
– Enhancing Interdisciplinary Communication in Ethical Guidelines for AI System Design
Ethical guidelines can be sometimes too vague and sometimes too restrictive. Ideally, such guidelines support our collaborative inter- and transdisciplinary efforts, but in practice they can easily fall flat, confuse or miss the mark. For example, words such as “agency” and “autonomy” can have drastically different meanings in different contexts. Furthermore, practitioners in AI system development and application are offered a plethora of different ethical guidelines, as well as (increasingly binding) policy instruments. Ambiguous concepts, implicit knowledge, and paradigmatic differences present crucial misalignments in the current landscape of tools to support responsible AI development and governance.
With a multidisciplinary focus group, we want to explore experienced challenges associated with, on the one hand, developing and, on the other, working with ethical guidelines in the context of AI system design. We will investigate how effective guidelines could bridge different practices and foster mutual understanding: guidelines for guidelines.
