Working Visit of the Dutch Parliamentary Committee on Health to TU Delft

Healthcare Innovation Requires a Systemic Approach

On November 25, the Parliamentary Committee on Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) visited TU Delft to discuss the challenges and opportunities in the healthcare sector. The key message: the healthcare system is under significant pressure and requires action—but technological innovation alone is not enough.

During the visit, speakers emphasized that innovation should not only focus on technology, but also on structural improvements in organization, financing, and implementation. Professor Catholijn Jonker provided insights into the role of AI in healthcare, highlighting her research on developing intelligent systems that collaborate with humans and respect human behaviour and preferences. This reflects the broader vision that technology should support, not lead.

In addition to discussions, committee members witnessed hands-on demonstrations, including an advanced surgical robot that integrates MRI imaging, stores surgical knowledge, and can help train future surgeons. The visit offered valuable insights and tools to work toward a future-proof and human-centered healthcare system.
